The first extensive work we had done on the house was to reduce heat loss through windows and doors. All windows and doors were double-glazed in Spring 2009. We had a mixture of windows, including both casement windows of varying sizes and sash windows.
- We wanted to preserve the look of the house, so we decided to have wooden window frames.
- Re-using the old wooden window frames would have allowed draughts, so we decided to have the wood replaced at the same time.
The cost was high, because we chose to have the wooden frames replaced. However, we were pleased with the result in that not only did our gas consumption go down considerably but also it was difficult to tell the difference without going close up to the windows. The bathroom was the exception, because we decided to have the modern window replaced with a sash window, which is similar to what would have been there originally (and matching the other 2 sash windows in the house). Although we liked the sash window, it took surprisingly long to get used to the change. The kitchen window had been enlarged, so we couldn't replace the sash window.
